Chondro-malacia
Patella
Most common
cause of knee pain in young individuals.
Chondro-Malacia Patella (CMP) is the most common cause of
knee pain in younger individuals. It literally translates to:
Chondro = Cartilage.
Malacia = Softening.
Patella = Knee cap bone.
This is the first stage of degeneration. The cartilage
becomes soft. If ignored, it gradually starts to wear off, exposing the
underlying bone. The bones then start to rub against each other, ensuing frank
Arthritis needing a knee replacement surgery. Hence, its important to identify
& address the problem when it is still reversible.
Hallmark symptoms of CMP are:
1. Knee pain after a period of inactivity.
2. Knee pain while getting up from a sitting position.
3. Knee pain while climbing up or down the stairs.
Simple clinical examination clinches the diagnosis. Xrays
or MRI may be often be needed to rule out other causes of knee pain.
Knee strengthening exercises are the main stay of
treatment for Chondro-malacia Patella. Knee strengthening must be directed
towards Quadriceps & Hamstrings. Physio consultation is often suggested.
Cartilage strengthening supplements are helpful in
reversal of cartilage softening.
Diet rich in proteins and vitamin C is beneficial for
knee cartilage.
Needless to mention, weight reduction is crucial to ensue
healing.
Best wishes & Wish you Happy Knees.
